When many cultures were only nomadic forest dwellers over 5000 years ago, India established Harappan culture in the Sindhu valley. From then on, India has always led the way and has been the pioneer in various fields of life. To substantiate;

  • India invented the number system. Zero was invented by Aryabhatta.
  • The world's first university was established in Takshila in 700 BC. More than 10500 students from all over the world studied more than 60 subjects.
  • The art of navigation was born in the river Sindh 6000 years ago. The word navigation is derived from Sanskrit word Navgatih.
  • Bhaskaracharya calculated the time taken by the earth to orbit the sun hundreds of years before the astronomer Smart. The time taken by the earth to orbit the sun: ( 5th century) 365.25875684 days.
  • The pioneer of wireless communication was Prof. Jagdeesh Bose.
  • The earliest reservoir and dam for irrigation was built in Saurashtra.
  • Chess was invented in India.

All the above are just the tip of the iceberg and the list carries on. Till today with Indians like Sabeer Bhatia being the founder of Hotmail (world's no. 1 web based email program), Vinod Dham being the creator of the Pentium chip, Azim Premji being the third richest person in the world, Vinod Khosla being the co-founder of Sun Micro Systems (whose brain-child is Java) and many Indians being the CEOs of well known companies- Appnet America Online (largest ISP in the world), Network solutions (the sole web domain assigner) and Web Methods Lucent Technologies (pioneer in fiber optics)

As Mark Twain once said: "India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of speech, the mother of history, the grand-mother of legend and the great grand-mother of tradition. Our most valuable and constructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only."

Thus, what now follows is a list of those enterprising Indians overseas who have brought laurels to the nation in the year that has just gone by.
