OOTY

One of the few recognizable remnants of the British Raj, Ooty is paradise for nature lovers and mikers. Nestling in the Nilgiri hills of southern India, it is a legacy of the British and continues to posses, all the distinctive characteristics of the colonial era. Popularly known as the 'queen of hill stations' and not without reason.


COONOOR

Coonoor's the largest hill station in the Nilgiris. Situated on the eastern side of the southern extremely of the Doddabetta range, at an elevation of 1858 mts above sea level, this lucid back town is a sheer delight, not least for it's exquisite scenery.

DALHOUSIE

Dalhousie is situated in the Chamba district, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, at a height of 2039 mts above sea level. Spreading over five low level hills, at the western edge of the Dhauladhar range just east of the Ravi river, the place is well inked with the rest of the country. Nearest railroad in PATHANKOT (80 kms away). KANGRA airport (140 kms) and JAMMU airport (180 kms) are the nearest airports. The national capital Delhi, is about 559 km away. Regular buses ply to and from Amritsar, Jammu, Dharamsala (10 hrs), Shimla (16 hrs), and Pathankot.

Accommodation facilities in Dalhousie include the state run tourism boards such as Hotel Geetanjali (Tel: 21155) on the Aroma-n-Claire (Tel: 2199) and Mountview Tel: 2120), both to which are centrally located and offer rooms at reasonable rates. The other hotels are Silverton, Fair View hotel (Tel: 2206) and Nahar's Hotel (Tel: 2175).

Places of interest while visiting Dalhousie include the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary and the significant spots on the hills of Portreya, Moti Tibba and Bakrota.

KULLU

Kullu is the district Head Quaters of the same name in the state of Himachal Pardesh. Situated at an altitude of 1219 mts and a population size of about 14,500 it is based on the western banks of the Beas river. Best time to visit Kullu is mid-March to mid-April and mid-September to mid-November.

Accommodation facilities include the Silvermoon at Dhalpua (Tel: 2488) and Hotel Sarvari (Tel: 2471) both run by Himachal State Tourism and the Apple Valley Resort at Mohali (Tel: 66266).

Span Resorts - on the road to Manali (Tel: 83138), provides exclusive facility with cottages next to the river, and falls under the expensive bracket.

By Air: Nearest airport is at Bhuntar (10 kms away). Private airlines such as Jagson Airlines and Archana Airways have flights from Delhi. Raj Air, connects Mumbai to Kullu via Chandigarh.

By Road: There are direct buses from Kulhira, Dharmsala, Shimla (235 kms), Chandigarh (270 kms) and Delhi. These bus routes continue north to Manali, 42 kms away.

Places of interest in Kullu, include the historical Sultanpur Palace and the various temples that are spread around the town. The town is famous for its handicrafts and clothing items such as shawls and caps. State owned emporiums and private shops that dot the roads of Kullu.

DHARMSALA

This beautiful town is situated at an altitude between 1250 mts and 2000 mts, above sea level amidst pure forests. Dharmsala has great variations not only in levels and temperatures, but also in character. The place is pleasant in summers and cold in winters. The tourists are advised to arrange their clothing accordingly.

The town in itself is actually split into two parts. The lower section is called Dharmsala, while the higher settlement (3 kms away, 10 kms by road) is called Mcleodganj, 500 mts above the lower settlement. Dharmsala is also home to his holiness the Dalai Lama, spiritual head of the Buddhists, who resides at Mcleodganj.

Situated 514 kms from Delhi, 239 kms from Chandigarh, 235 kms from Shimla, 214 kms from Kullu, it is a popular tourist destination.

By Air: Jagson Airlines flies to Delhi and Kullu from Kangra airport at Gaggal, 15 kms from Dharmsala.

By Rail: Nearest narrow gauge railhead is 17 kms away and broad gauge railhead 90 kms away at Pathankot.
