Other than the
adventure sports that the natural terrain offers most visitors in India,
tourists can also undertake a choice of leisure activities.

Golf is a major attraction in the country, and most cities have at least
one golf course. The oldest golf course in the world, outside Great Britain,
is the one in Calcutta. Similarly, Gulmarg has the distinction of having
the world's highest 18-hole golf course. Visitors can look forward to
the sport in Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai (Madras), Srinagar, Shimla, as
well as in a host of other destinations. Golf equipment is usually available
on hire, as are caddies.
Polo is played largely in metros only, and in cantonment towns by officers
in the Indian Army. It was once the privileged sport of only the Indian
royalty. Tournaments are usually played in the winter season.
Those who may like to spice their city leisure sports with a little to
spice their city leisure sports with a little action, should check out
facilities for ballooning, gliding and hang gliding, still with a limited
following but fast catching on in popularity. Those who prefer gentler
options may find club surroundings ideal for such pastimes as bridge or
even billiards.
Strenuous sports like squash and tennis can be played in the courts of
several city hotels, and also at city clubs.
India is also now on the international circuit for several rally sports,
some now established as popular annual events. A more charming variation
of this are the vintage car rallies held from time to time, at different
venues.
In addition, a range of sports can be watched in enclosed and open stadia,
covering every discipline. Visitors will also do well to remember that
most hotels offer guests a jogging trail either within the premises, or
just outside the hotel.
Similarly, sailing too is offered to visitors, specially in Mumbai where
the Arabian Sea is ideal for the sport.
